Week 8: Creating the Maya Swatch for props and prop-making

Task for Week 8

Our focus this week was on prop-making so we discussed in a group meeting which props we were going to work on this week. I chose to create the stairs as it was a high priority object which still needed created so I made the stairs as my weekly prop. I also created the swatch for our Maya scene this week using Adobe Photoshop. My teammate helped with gathering the swatch colours for all the props within the scene from reference images from different objects gathered over the weeks and estimating what other props that will be made would look like.

Stairs prop purpose in the scene

The purpose of the stairs within the scene is to give the scene more depth and make the atmosphere on the wolf's side of the scene seem more intimidating and eerie. This is further enhanced with other props such as the sword, chains and pillars to seem as if the wolf was captive but the stairs give the idea that the cave goes deeper and makes the scene more unique.

References

I used a few references to get an idea of what I wanted the stairs within the scene to look like. I had a few different ideas of what the stairs could look like and I took these references so I could take aspects of all of them to create the ideal staircase for our Roki scene.

Concept Art

I also made some concept art of the stairs of what they may look like in my image. I originally thought railings may be a nice touch to the stairs however I thought afterwards that it made it look too modern. We agreed as a team that they would be better without the railing and without them it gave the stairs a more ancient touch to the scene which worked for the cave.

Maya Prop-making

I created the stairs object in Maya with help from looking at the reference images and from my concept art. I create 4 step stairs to made a wide and bulky staircase using the environment colours to make it look like as if it were naturally apart of the cave scene. I added bricks to the staircase as I thought that it would give it extra detail to the steps which separate the Seer's upper half side of the scene and the lower half of the wolf's side. I also added edges to the steps to look like the rock was eroded into a staircase overtime and shows the old age of the staircase.

Building the Swatch in Photoshop

I also built the swatch in photoshop so that we could get

the colours for our objects in the scene using different layers in photoshop and creating different squares for UV mapping in a couple weeks. I gathered all the swatch colours which both my teammate and I had collected for all the props and we started creating the squares in the photoshop document. I also made book cover vectors in my free time for the Seer's books for later so that books in the scene have more detail so I also included a swatch with the book cover vectors on them.
