Week 6: Making the Mushroom props

braniff-j5

Task for Week 6

Our team's focus for this week was to get key props made for scene so that we environment artists can start building the scene once the props are all made. We had a group meeting this week and we discussed which Codeck's assets we would be taking on. I chose to create the mushroom as I found the lecture from Week 5 on making mushroom splines quite interesting and we needed mushrooms for our scene.

Mushroom prop's purpose for scene

The purpose of the mushrooms within the scene as it will show that the cave is quite old and has aged from long ago which explains why fungi such as mushrooms are growing across the scene which further develops the setting as ancient. This also acts as a prop for the Seer character as she brews potions so the mushrooms act as an interesting ingredient for her potion-making.

References

I looked at these images of mushrooms for reference of how I would like the mushroom's in the scene to look like. I was think it would fit more with the Roki style to get a more simple mushroom with a large bulb and stem and make different variants of it. The colours were also helpful in these references as I wanted to have a whitish/yellowish stem with a colourful bulb on top.

Concept Art

I made some concept art for what the mushrooms may look like within the scene. I sketched these with bending splines as I recalled in the lecture how to bend a spline for a mushroom prop to make drooping and different variants of mushrooms. I drew different types of mushrooms and I think I will select the one which fits most with the Roki style. I think I will choose the roundest mushroom as I think mushroom #1 will suit the scene best.

Prop-making in Maya

These are the mushroom props which I created in Maya using both the images of mushrooms and my concept art as references. My aim was to make the same type of mushroom with a large bulb as the mushroom piece and a cartoonishly wide stem which makes the prop suit more with the Roki Style because of its simplified shapes for Roki props.

I made smaller types of mushrooms with the different varieties too so that there would be a range of different mushrooms so the scene looks more natural with using unique mushrooms in the scene.
