Week 5: Making a desk prop for our scene

Task for Week 5

Our team's focus this week was to help make some props for our scene. My team and I had made an asset list and we assigned specific props to each person using the codecks to divide work between each other equally. My task this week was to focus on making a desk prop for the scene as it was an asset of a medium priorty on the Codecks.

Desk prop's purpose to the scene

The purpose of the desk prop will be for key storytelling as the Seer character will use this desk for researching ancient texts and will be a part of her character as somewhat of a collector of mysterious and magical items.

Use of reference images

I used a variety of different reference images of tables taken by myself and researched online to try create a table in Maya which I thought would be functional as a desk for the Seer's items and would suit the Roki style.

Scandinavian Table Reference

I thought that this reference image was a helpful resource as a guide to what a Scandinavian table may look like however I would want the desk to look more worn and damaged given that the desk is placed in a cave/dungeon.

Concept Art

I made some concept art of how I imagined the desk looking like within our scene using a shaded sketch. I also took reference from the Scandanavian table above as I drew the legs similarly to how the reference looks above and then I used it to understand how the wooden joints connect. I also took a reference from my kitchen table and used that as a reference for understanding the structural details of a table.

Making the table in Maya

I made the table prop as my weekly prop during week 5 and used the reference above and the concept art I sketched of the table to create this maya prop. I think that it fits the Roki style with it's simple features and low topology. I added extra detail besides the top table and legs as I also added joints between legs and the table top so that the shape would make sense and it would look accurate to a functioning desk. One of the environment artists discussed with me how it would interesting to include chips within the wood at the top of the table which we thought was good attention to detail since the desk would be quite worn from being the cave for a long time.
