Week 4: Making a new Pillar prop for our scene

braniff-j5

Overview

I made a new pillar prop for our Roki scene, one pillar that is ordinary and another pillar which has been broken due to the damage of the wolf character in the cave. I took a few references to get an idea of what I want the pillar to look like and then I drew some concept art. I then started modelling the pillar using the sketches and references and created a pillar which I though suited the Roki art style and was quite logically accurate.

Gathering References

These references were used to get an understanding of how I wanted my pillar to look like when designing it. The wolf would have been chained to these pillar so I wanted to make them to look tall and sturdy so it makes sense why they kept the wolf in the cave for so long. I liked the reference image on the very left the most but I also wanted to incorporate different features from all the images chosen to create a unique pillar.

Concept Art

I drew this concept art of the pillar which I wanted to create for the Roki scene. I drew an ordinary version of the pillar I wanted to model and also a broken version of the same pillar as I want the broken pilar to convey the chaos and destruction of the wolf character. I also drew a sketch of how the wolf would have looked when he was shacked between the pillars but the broken pillar will show that he escaped his chains.

I made the pillar prop in Maya and created it using the references gathered and the concept art I sketched and implemented all the ideas to create the prop. I think that it looks quite good and suits the Roki style well. I like the attention to detail but I would like to go back to the project next week and improve small details such as the scratching of the pillar and conditioning of the prop.

I also created a broken version of the same pillar as I could imagine that the wolf character within the cave broke out from these shackles on the pillars and perhaps broke one of them completely. I want to add more details of how damaged the broken pillar is next week however I like how the smaller piece of the pillar look like it got broken from the broken ends of the pillar column.

This a view of how the pillars would look in the scene beside a Roki character. They have been scaled appropriately to the height I would like them to be and I think they would look very interesting in the cave scene we are creating, adding layer of destruction to the wolf's nature.
