Week 7 - UV's Part 1

meekin-s

When week 7 started the lecturers task the students with UV's. We were told to follow a video that was set by the Animation department to teach us how to apply UV's to a model in Maya.

The first video that I watched was about applying a texture to a cube. In this case, we were trying to make a dice. In order to do this I had to make a new Maya project with a cube and I also had to download an image of a dice net. I then had to make a project folder so I could import the image into the image folder. This would allow Maya to find the image easily every time I open Maya as if I had stored the image on a different computer and not in the same folder as the scene I would lose the image and it won't be applied.

Once I placed the cube into the scene I then had to click the UV tab at the top window and open UV editor. When you click on the cube it will show you the net layout of the cube.

Once I had opened this I then right-clicked on the cube and added a new material to the cube. I made it a Lambert and I had to create a new one as I didn't want to ruin the light grey texture with 3d shadowing. Once I created a new Lambert I then had to rename it appropriately. I then clicked on a checkerboard box that was beside the colour option. This came up with. a bunch of different options that I could use. I clicked on the file as this would allow me to use the Dice image and use it as a UV.

Once the image was imported I opened up the UV editor. The dice image was not aligned with the cube. To fix this I right-clicked the image in the UV editor and clicked on UV. This allowed me to use the vertices of the cube's net. This allowed me to re-Aline the net so that it was the appropriate size and scaled properly onto the model.

I then did the same with a Cylinder model and an Arm model but I didn't add an image to them. Instead, I added turned on the Checker map and this added a checker image to the cylinder and it also added text as well.
