On the Trello board for Asset Development, there is a face template from the character Tove from Roki. I was able to download it and create a Free Image Plane which allows me to place an image into Maya so I can use the tools in my hands to create a shape that is similar to the image. This is a good way to use reference photos as it allows me to create a shape that is very similar and I can make any changes if necessary.

I first made a cube and placed it into the scene. Then I added divisions to the cube to give the surface some smoothness. This turns the cube into a sphere. I then scaled up the sphere to the size of the image.

I then made the cube object live which allowed me to use the Quad Draw tool to make little circles at every corner. It was like Dot to Dot. Once I drew out the shape I then used the shift key and pressed it on a face that I had made and it shaded it in and linked the corners together to create a shape. If any of the dots were out of place I was able to move the small dots to re-aline them.
This allowed me to create the face template onto the sphere of the character's face.

Once I made the face I then pulled back the vertices to create depth in the face as it looked very flat. This helped make the face look alive.
